If you’re considering getting into the field of ghost hunting, please make a concerted effort to fully research the equipment that you’ll be bringing along and understand exactly what it is that you’re measuring. All too often I’ve watched members of some of the television ghost hunting teams walk around a house with an EMF “ghost meter” and get excited because they pick up an elevated EMF reading near a high power outlet or circuit box. The absolute tragedy of the field of ghost hunting is the fact that so many untrained and unprofessional researchers are getting involved.

With that said, the last thing I want to do is discourage anyone from conducting field research of paranormal hot spots. However, for your research to be very effective, and if you hope to learn anything from the experience, it’s absolutely critical that you bring along the right equipment, enough equipment, and understand how that equipment works.

Get the Right Ghost Hunting Equipment for Effective Field Research

The entire purpose of traveling on-site to a paranormal hot spot is two-fold for the scientist. On the one hand, you do want to capture conclusive evidence that something unexplainable and paranormal is really taking place at that location. However, in addition to collecting evidence, the second goal should be to take as many ambient environmental, circumstantial and radiological readings as possible for comparison to other locations that don’t have any reports of paranormal events.

The entire point of a scientific study is to compare the measurements of conditions surrounding an “abnormality” to conditions surrounding “normality” so that you can isolate and identify the contributing factors. As it stands now, most paranormal investigative groups are so wrapped up with collecting evidence to prove the phenomenon exists that they completely forget about the scientific process and working on finding the cause, not just identifying the effects.

By bringing along this test equipment, you’ll be able to measure the full spectrum of EMF radiation, sound waves, light effects (video), and temperature fluctuations (IF cameras). Review these carefully - at the very least you’ll need a video camera and an EMF meter.
