Early in 2009, I was tasked with writing an article on the most haunted State in the U.S. for LoveToKnow Paranormal. I must say that it was one of the more difficult articles I’ve written because I couldn’t get myself to call any location the most haunted without some kind of evidence to prove it.
So, I diligently went to work digging through Internet stories of paranormal hot-spots, and started marking up a map of the United States and marked up each area with a number for the general volume of stories I could find for that region. It was a very rough way to do such an estimate, because it assumes that the population for all areas have equal Internet access, and that the people there are just as likely to report haunted activity as any other. This probably isn’t very accurate, but it’s the best I could do.
The Epicenter of Paranormal Hot Spots
The process took some time, but I did notice that there appears to be a very “hot” paranormal region of the country that is also almost at the very center of the nation. The hottest areas included Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Michigan - Michigan being one of the most active regions in the entire country. I did notice that this entire area was centered around Ohio.
So, in the article I classified Ohio as the most haunted state, since all paranormal activities (at least those reported online) seemed to emanate from that central state. However (and this is where it gets weird), I started thinking about this and realized something fascinating. If you look at the map of the United States, this region isn’t exactly the geographical center - it’s actually a little bit skewed to the East and North. And then an interesting thought struck me. Could it be?
Locating the Population Epicenter of North America
The first map that I located was the population density of the United States. According to Wikipedia, the following map represents that density, with darker blue displaying the higher levels of population, which you can see are mostly toward the Eastern side of the United States.

However, even more interesting is when I came across the map that displayed the mean population center of the United States, ever shifting westward as time goes on.

Astonishingly, the shifting mean center of population centers upon the same exact region of the country where most reports of paranormal activity come from. Whether this is significant, or even accurate based on my very rough preliminary analysis, is questionable. But if it is true, it represents an interesting correlation that should probably be examined more closely.
While I shy away from the psychic explanation for paranormal activity (where unrecognized psychokinesis causes paranormal activity around unwitting victims), I have to say that this evidence clearly weighs things in favor of the psychic energy theory. On the other hand, if a foreign power were to focus psychological weapons upon another nation, the mean center of population is probably the area of the country that would be targeted - so the evidence also supports the mind-control threat theory as well.
Whatever it means - I found the appearance of a correlation absolutely fascinating and also noted it in the LoveToKnow article. I hope to follow up further with some more accurate research if possible.
