holy spirit symbolsThe field of the paranormal can catch many skeptics off guard. When you walk into a house expecting that you’ll be able to easily debunk everything that happens, and then the next thing you know there are objects flying around, doors opening on their own and voices coming out of thin air - an entire worldview can get turned upside down. Unless you’re completely prepared for what you’re going to face when you enter a haunted location, you’re asking for trouble.

One of the most common aspects of ancient spiritual beliefs is symbolism. Most ancient religions (as well as contemporary ones) are filled with countless examples of powerful symbolism. The symbolic power is not necessarily of a spiritual nature (although many do believe that it is), the power of these symbols also come from what they represent for people. Some also believe that the power comes from what they represent to the “entities” as well.

What are Holy Spirit Symbols?

In almost every religion, birds are extremely symbolic. For example the Eagle feather in the Native American Navajo tribe is tremendously symbolic, and it represents honor, courage and a connection with the Creator. In numerous religions around the world, the Dove in particular is a common symbol.

holy spirit symbols

*Islam: Doves surround the three Holy Virgins represented by stones
*Japan: In mythology, the Dove holding a sword announced the end of war
*Pagan: The Dove represented affection and fidelity
*China: The Dove represents marriage and long life
*Greek: The bird of Athena is a dove which represents a renewal of life

And of course, the Dove is the most prominent symbol of the Holy Spirit in Christianity. However, there are a number of other symbols that represent the Holy Spirit, and if you are a practicing Christian and you are considering entering some of these locations with powerful paranormal activity, it might be a good idea to strengthen your spiritual resolve by making it a practice of wearing shirts, hats or other apparel that feature Holy Spirit symbols.

A List of the Symbols of the Holy Spirit

If you do have an interest in the symbolism behind one of the most powerful Christian icons in the bible, the following list covers Holy Spirit symbols and the biblical references that justify those symbols. Keep in mind that most of these symbols come from very ancient origins, and in most cases no one really knows the true origin of these symbols, but one thing many people recognize is the apparent power that Holy Spirit symbols have in the presence of paranormal activity.

The Dove

The following biblical passages directly refer to the Holy Spirit as having the form of a dove:

“…and the holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove.” -Luke 3:22
“…and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him.” -Matt 3:16
“…I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him.” -John 1:32

Fire

The following passages identify the Holy Spirit with the symbol of fire.

“Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, 3 which parted and came to rest on each one of them.” -Apostles 2:3
“So Moses decided, “I must go over to look at this remarkable sight, and see why the bush is not burned.” -Exodus 3:2
“Neither the column of cloud by day nor the column of fire by night ever left its place in front of the people.” -Exodus 13:21

Water

Baptism is an obvious reference to the Holy Spirit as water, but the following passages further explain the symbolism.

“He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.” -Matt 3:11
“Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” -John 3:5

Oil

Many people don’t realize that oil is another powerful symbol (actual oil, not the image of it) referencing the Holy Spirit as well.

“…how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth 16 with the holy Spirit and power.” -Apostles 10:38
“But you have the anointing that comes from the holy one, and you all have knowledge.” -John 2:20

A Cloud (or Wind)

Finally, a cloud as well as wind are also symbols that occur in the bible referencing the Holy Spirit.

“When Aaron announced this to the whole Israelite community, they turned toward the desert, and lo, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud!” -Exodus 16:10
“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, 2 and it filled the entire house in which they were.” -Apostles 2:2

Final Words

Upon reflecting on these references, it’s easy to see why these symbols integrated so thoroughly into the Christian faith, especially Catholicism with its Holy Water and anointing oils. If this is your religion, rest assured that you are well advised to practice your faith in the progress of your investigations.

At the very least, it’s our faith that shields us during times of confusion and surreal activity. The one thing you can be certain of when your world turns up side down is that even though there could possibly be entities meaning to do you harm, at least you know there are also entities that are there to protect you.
